CAF Champions League: Al Ahly, Wydad play out a draw in Alexandria

  • Al Ahly 1-1 Wydad Casablanca

Top African clubs Al Ahly and Wydad played out a draw in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

Moamen Zakaria put Al Ahly ahead just after three minutes but that wasn’t enough for them as their opponents found the equalizer through their leading scorer Achraf Bencharki thirteen later.

Wydad host the return match next Saturday having won all six home matches en route to the final.

They have appeared in two previous Champions League finals, defeating Al Hilal of Sudan in 1992 and losing to Esperance of Tunisia six years ago.

The winner will pocket $2.5 million and also qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
