Awany, Sadam goals aid KCCA to CAF Champions League win over Al Ahly


KCCA FC needed goals from Captain Timothy Awany and Sadam Juma to claim a 2-0 win over Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the 2018 CAF Champions League group game played at Namboole on Tuesday.

Sadam found the back of the net off a long-range shot in the 74th minute from outside the area thanks to a short pass from Lawrence Bukenya after the visitors had lost possession.

Awany later converted from the spot in the 89th minute after Derrick Nsibambi was clipped in the area after taking off his man.

The match started with high intensity, and KCCA came close quite several occasions as well as the Egyptian Premier League champions.

KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago was one to thank after he stopped three one-on-one situations, also saving Walid Soliman’s penalty that should handed the North Africans the lead in the 24th minute.

Habib Kavuma was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box as he tried to track proceedings alongside troublesome Phakamani Mahlambi before the referee pointed to the spot.

Lukwago went the right way parrying out Soliman’s shot, Awany rushing to take care of the rest.

8 minutes later, Mohammed Shaban missed from close range as he headed the ball just wide of goal thanks to a great cross from Julius Poloto.

With 5 minutes to the mandatory break, Mahlambi should have gone past Lukwago for perhaps a goal for the visitors but the shot-stopper’s sliding challenge forced the star off the ball, the latter clearing for safety.

Mike Mutebi made changes early in the second half when he took off Jackson Nunda for Bukenya and it was Shaban who rued a missed opportunity when he missed a tap-in off a brilliant through-pass from Sadam.

Poloto later failed to connect home Sadam’s cross in the 62nd minute, Mike making his second substitution; Derrick Nsibambi for Isaac Kirabira, 8 minutes later.

Al Ahly’s Marwan Mohsen confidently controlled a pass in the centre of the area thereafter but blasted wide the resultant shot.

Sadam nevertheless didn’t miss on the opposite side as he netted KCCA’s opener.

Al Ahly’s Mohammed Hany was cautioned in the 82nd minute moments before Nsiambi was tackled in the area for a KCCA penalty.

Awany sent El Shenawy the right way but it was a thunderbolt – far from reach as KCCA recorded their second goal of the day.

The triumph was the first by a Ugandan side at the group stages of the continental club showpiece.
