Airtel Uganda sponsors Buganda Masaza Cup for second year in a row


For the second consecutive year, Airtel Uganda has once again joined the Buganda Kingdom to launch the Masaza football tournament.

This was on Thursday during a press conference held at the Kingdom offices in Bulange, Mengo as the platinum sponsors.

In attendance were Airtel Uganda officials led by the managing director VG Somasekhar, Buganda Kingdom officials led by the Katikiro Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, on behalf of the Kabaka of Buganda and the sports minster Owek. Henry Ssekabembe Kiberu.

Airtel Uganda has offered shs. 400M to assist in the organization of the tournament played by the 19 Masaza teams of Buganda.

Somasekhar remarked;

We are proud to once again come together with this prestigious kingdom to launch this tournament. Our commitment to Ugandan sports is highlighted by the involvement in football at every level from Airtel Rising Stars through to national team. Football unites individuals and societies and teaches value of teamwork.

Mayiga lauded Airtel Uganda for the sponsorship and support to Buganda Kingdom activities. Airtel is no stranger to this kingdom.

We have worked together in the past on a number of projects and I believe we shall continue with this relationship. We thank you a lot.

Each of the teams received balls, pair of jerseys and shs 5M to start with ahead of kick off. The opening match will be played in Gomba district on 23rd June 2018 and it will be attended by his Majesty the King of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

The tournament has been played since 2004. Gomba pipped Ssingo in last year’s well attended finale at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
