Oliver Giroud scored a brace as Arsenal progressed past Middlesbrough in the FA Cup fifth round to reach the Semi Finals of the competition on Sunday.

The France international struck twice at Emirates Stadium to down Aitor Karanka’s men who shocked Premier League champions Manchester City 2-0 in the fourth round.

Middlesbrough had won six consecutive games and not lost in 10 ahead of their trip to London but all was washed down the drain. They made 8 alterations to their side following their midweek win over Blackpool.

On-loan striker Patrick Bamford – who scored the opening goal in the stunning victory at City – returned to the side but however struggled to contain Arsenal.

Santi Cazorla forced an early save from fellow Spaniard Tomas Mejias off a free kick but was later unable to prevent Giroud from opening the scoring after 27 minutes.

Cazorla’s pass found Kieran Gibbs in space, Gibbs crossing from the left to find Giroud who rounded off a slick move into the back of the net.

Giroud struck again just two minutes later. He escaped his marker only to volley home Sanchez’s corner with a clinical left-foot finish from six yards out.

Mejias produced a fine save to parry away Sanchez’s glancing header that looked destined for the far corner of the net off Carzola’s free kick in 64th minute before Walcott was denied too five minutes from time.
