- Uganda Cranes 0-0 Malawi Flames
Uganda Cranes settled for a goalless draw with Malawi as both sides failed to find the back of the net despite a couple of chances on Tuesday at Mandela National Stadium.
The home side had come off a comprehensive 3-1 win over Sao Tome and Principe on Saturday but met tougher opposition in Malawi.
Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre and technical team made three changes to the starting team that faced the West Africans.
Vipers’ holding midfielder Tadeo Lwanga, right back Denis Iguma and Yunus Sentamu started in the places of Geofrey ‘Baba’ Kizito, Nico Wakiro Wadada and William Luwagga Kizito respectively.
Yunus Ssentamu came close early when he beat two defenders and shot into the side net with his left foot from an acute angle after 20 minutes.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Dennis Onyango was also active when he collected a dangerous long ball from Malawi right back Precious Sambani in the 25th minute
Lwanga became the first player to be cautioned by Rwanda FIFA Referee Louis Hakizimana for a foul on Dalitso Sailesi.
On 36 minutes, striker Sentamu delivered a teasing cross from the right using his weaker left foot.
Two minutes later, Ochaya chipped for Sentamu and the latter’s pressure onto the Malawi captain Limbikani Mzava earned the home side a corner kick. Yeovil Town towering defender Bevis Mugabi headed out the resultant corner kick from the far post over the goal post before the two sides returned for the mandatory half time rest.
In the second half, a mistake by Murushid Jjuuko and Mugabi nearly cost Uganda Cranes but second half substitute Cheiukepo Musowoya was denied by Onyango from close range.
Okwi later shot high of goalie Charles Swini’s goal after 58 minutes before he was replaced by Romanian based William Luwagga Kizito.
Uganda Cranes best moment on the evening was goal bound deflected shot by defender Gombezeani Chirwa following another teasing delivery by Ndugwa on 87 minutes.
Musowoya nearly scored from long range but Onyango was up to the task, parrying the ball for a corner kick.
Uganda Cranes will face Tanzania during match day two of the AFCON 2019 qualifiers in September, 2018. Malawi will play Morocco.

Sebastien Desabre (Uganda Cranes head coach)
We did not take the chances created but there is room and hope for the team.
Ronny Van Geneugeden (Malawi Head coach)
Uganda Cranes are a physical side with some good players and strict tactical play. I watched them a couple of days ago against Sao Tome and Principe and I warned my players to expect a physical contest from the first minute. We were equal to the test but sad that we did not score.
Dennis Onyango (Uganda Cranes captain)
The clean sheet against Malawi was good. We created some chances just like the opponents. I am happy for the new players.
Bevis Mugabi (Uganda Cranes Defender)
Nice way to finish camp with a clean sheet! Shame we couldn’t push for the goal in the end! Thank you once again for the warm welcoming.
