South Africa has formally bid to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) to replace Cameroon.

The 2010 World Cup host had submitted a bid, a South African Football Association spokesman said on Friday.

“We have submitted our bid documents,” SA Football Association (Safa) spokesman Dominic Chimhavi said in reply to emailed questions from AFP.

“[It] is now up to Caf to decide (who hosts the 2019 Cup of Nations.”

Confederation of African Football is racing against time to get a new host after Cameroon was stripped off hosting rights with the former citing behind-schedule preparations and security concerns.

Egypt has also expressed interest to host the biennial African football showpiece after Morocco surprisingly announced it would not bid.
